Urban Overpopulation
Problems around the world
In order to enjoy the convenience that cities offer, majority of the world population is concentrated in cities. To accommodate this population demand, the city has been constructing high-rise buildings instead of infrastructure construction which takes 6-10 years to completely build. High-rise buildings have increased the city’s population capacity, which has brought more people into the city. This phenomenon has caused overpopulation. Overpopulation in the city is occurring because infrastructure development can not keep pace with population demand. This is causing more and more intense regional unbalanced development, physical and social problems including urban transportation, environment and housing.

Urban overpopulation will become a serious problem. Currently, big cities have a population density of at least 10,000 people per square kilometer, and density is still rising. According to the United Nations report, they also predict that the world’s population will increase to 10.9 billion by 2050. This will happen most sharply in the world’s 49 poorest countries. In the process of development, the poor countries will follow the problems of the existing big cities if the speed of infrastructure construction does not develop dramatically. Therefore, now the problem of overpopulation will be a concern in the whole world and not only in advanced countries. Our project is an architectural proposal for resolving existing urban overpopulation problems and the problems developing countries have to face.

The way to reduce urban overpopulation
The construction of a new city is necessary for resolving the urban overpopulation. Above all, for a new city to be an alternative to high-rise city, rapid construction of a convenient infrastructure is needed. Cities with high convenience will be created rapidly when limitation of speed in urban construction is overcome. This will be a starting point to solving urban overpopulation. This project proposes infrastructure modularization for cities that need to be built high speed. Where there is technology, a “packed” skyscraper with a complete Urban Infrastructure module is created and moved to where it is needed. The Skyscraper will then immediately perform the function of the city through transformation.

Urban Module
The City package is composed of rectangular parallelepiped building. The scale is 300mx300mx600m. When fully unfolded, the city can accommodate about 30,000 people just as a large town would. The four-sided district serves as a residence, while the main tower and central part serve as infrastructure and cultural facilities. Infrastructure for living is placed under the ground, and public transportation is provided as well. Also, solar glass was used in all buildings for a sustainable city. It has enlarged the area to obtain environment-friendly energy, and it can satisfy energy necessary per population by itself. Carbon fiber, which has the strength ten times stronger than that of iron, was used. Also, the elasticity is three times and the weight is one fifth when compared to iron. By using this, it is possible to reduce the weight when moving the Skyscraper.

Prospect
The City Package is an “urban module” that will resolve urban overpopulation that was created due to population expansion. High-tech and innovative city-building methods will dramatically reduce the time it takes to build a city, solve urban problems, and contribute to building a better environment for human.
